I am pleased to announce I just signed legislation which outlaws Russia
forever. The bombing begins in five minutes.

What disturbed me was not the joking with reference to nuclear war
(who among us was offended by the Bloom County strip whose punch line
was "Shall we dust Moscow, Mr. President?"). There is nothing wrong
with dark humor. However, what makes me sick is that it was NOT dark
humor, and that Reagan seems to view the removal of Russia from the
planet as an event he would not regret. His use of Russia, rather than
Soviet Union, indicates he is talking of the annihilation of a people/
culture/nation instead of the bloody defeat of a government/idealogy.
Does this mean he does not see a difference between war and genocide?

Reagan's off-hand attitude towards nuclear war is no surprise to those
who know his history. As Gil Scott-Heron, noted blues-ologist, said
about Reagan, "now we're supposed to believe that the man who called
for a bloodbath on our college campuses is Dudley goddamn DoRight?"

Oh, come on, people! I am an avowed Reagan detractor, and I would like
little more than seeing his semi-senile behind out of the Oval Office,
but this is just too much.

I mean, good grief, considering who Ron is, and his political constituency,
the damn statement was a *joke*!! Even Ron ain't stupid enough to *actually*
do something like that!!! Come on, Netters, where's your sense of humor?

I thought it was pretty funny, myself.

Outlaw Russia indeed. Foo.

Well, Bob, I think his jokes reveal something about what he views as
desirable, and also that he doesn't have enough sense to keep it to
himself.

Sure, the statement WAS a joke, but that's not the point. The
point is that Reagan has the sort of outlook on things that
leads him to make jokes like this. I don't think it is a very
funny joke, and I think that most rational people wouldn't say
something like that, no matter how humorously thay mean it to be
taken. It's like some of the really disgusting jokes you
sometimes see in net.jokes, like "What's the difference between
a Jew and a pizza? The pizza doesn't scream when you put it
into the oven." When I see jokes like this, I don't get quite
as upset, because I know that the person who thinks it's funny
is probably some psychotic who gets his kicks from torturing
puppies. Now, if I knew that he was in fact a famous doctor or
statesman or something like that, I would be upset. It's like
that with Reagan and his "joke". Just because "he wasn't really
serious, just kidding around a bit" doesn't make it any less
significant.

Holy moley, pal, do you take everything this seriously? You must
be a real blast at a party!

I joke about stuff like that all the time, and I consider myself (and
am considered by those who know me) an eminently "rational" person.
What strikes me as irrational is the paranoia that compels some people
to find dark motives hidden behind the most innocent of acts.

And besides, I do not "get my kicks from torturing puppies (I leave
that to Syrians);" I get mine from torturing ideologues...

From your favorite psychotic and mine,

Re the "Russia has been outlawed" joke, and ideas that it
reflects Ronnie's true character:

C'mon, folks. Freud said it, I think: "Sometimes a Cigar is just a cigar".
