"We didn't discover our values in a poll taken a week
before the convention"
from Ron Reagan's nomination acceptance speech...
Heres some quotes from a speech he made at the 1948 convention
of the ILGWU (care of NYT 8/22 p. 8):
"...the 37 year old Mr. Reagan attacked
the Republican Congress because
`the profits of corporations have
doubled while workers' wages increased
by only one quarter.' His anecdotal
technique already emerging, Mr. Reagan
told how a 91-year-old upstate N.Y.
worker had been forced to abandon
retirement because of `Republican Inflation.'"
"With Republican majorities in both
houses of Congress, Mr. Reagan protested,
labor `has been handcuffed,' S.S. benefits
`have been snatched away from almost a
million workers,' tax cuts `have been passed
to benefit the higher-income brackets alone'
and `millions of children have been deprived
of milk one provided through the Federal
school lunch program.'"
I mean, the guy's a friggin' liberal!!!!
Black humor aside, I agree with rabbit!jj that the real issues are being
passed over. Just as Watt was attacked for the ridiculus things he
said instead of the incredible ripoff of government land he was
responsible for, so is Reagan being attacked for his infantile
remarks. He has gotten off easy, though, because since his
"revisionist history of Vietnam" speech in '81, the press has
given up on monitoring his remarks for veracity -- since there is
so little to be found.
The real election issues, for me at least, are
1) who gets to pick the next 3 Supreme Court justices,
2) Whether patriotic Americans wave the flag while the
Honduran-based US troops "pave [Nicaragua], paint parking stripes,
and still be home for Christmas." (prediction: suicide truck bomb
in Honduras 2 or 3 days before election day...)
3) will the coat-hanger again become a medical instrument (voodoo obstetrics?)
Ron was OK at 37, but not at 73,
I'm a'gonna vote for Walt & Gerry
