[net.politics] Star Wars or not?

----------------------

Someone mentioned that the "star wars" plan would be 95% effective. Is this
an impressive figure? I don't think so.

If 20,000 missiles were fired towards US at the same time, 5% of them would
reach their targets. That is 1000 missiles. Isn't that enough? Even 99%
effectiveness would let 200 missiles through. And they(USSR) can make a lot more
missiles (thanx to the present state of arms control negotiations).

Is it so hard to see that the star wars system won't make things any safer?
Why? Because no system will be perfect. There will always be a way to counter
that system and counter the counter-system and so on.

I am willing to bet that even the "super-greedy" defense contractors
would like to be alive to make their super profits.

Be assured that the 5% of the missiles which sneak through will be
those pointed at the districts holding the 5% of the electoral votes which
Reagan and Bush don't carry in the upcoming election.
