For those of you in Iowa, check out what your crack-pot Congressman Tom Harkin wants to do with the military. From the "Congressional Record" for July 31, 1979, page 21681, here in part is what he said: ******************************************************************** Sec. 818. The President shall prepare and transmit to the Congress a plan of alternative transportation of the MX missile system. Such plan shall include recommendations with respect to the desirability and feasibility of floating the missles up and down the Mississippi River on barges. *** [Another alternative] plan shall include recommendations with the respect to the desirability and feasibility of transporting the missle using gasohol-powered tractors.... Sec. 823. There is to be authorized $55,000,000 for research and development of a solar-powered cruise missile. Sec. 824. The President shall prepare and transmit to the congress a plan of alternative energy use in armed forces vehicles, missiles, naval vessels, and aircraft. Sec. 825. Of the funds authorized to be appropriated by this act for nuclear attack submarines 10% of the funds must be used to develop a coal-powered attack submarine. Sec. 826. This section shall authorize that 50% of the troops in each of the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Air Force must complete, as part of their educational training, a full course in Transcendental Meditation... Sec. 828. In an effort to preserve cultural and religious diversity within the Armed Forces, troop strength shall include a 2 percent quota each of members of the Divine Light Mission, the Hare Krishna movement, the Worldwide Church of God, the Unification Church, and the Catholics. ****************************************************************** Come on! MX missiles on barges in the river? Gasohol-powered tractors hauling missiles? Solar-powered cruise missile? Coal- powered submarine? Transcendental Meditation?!? Required quotas of different religious sects??!!?? IS THIS GUY SERIOUS???!!! One would hope that the people of Iowa would not tolerate someone like this much longer! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tom Buckley AT&T Information Systems ...drutx!trb
