[net.politics] How did it get this far?

Long ago, in the time of the Slavery in the USA, a political party stood up.
That party had an open eye for human rights.
It cared for the poor, the black, the laborers.
It cared for social issues.
It did a big job fighting that slavery.
It even had black militia's in their ranks to free the slaves.
In short, it was a party that nowadays would be called pure left.

With the growing wealth of its voters, the laborers, that party - following
their interests - gradually shifted to the right.

Nowadays that party still exists.
It has turned away from the poor, the black, the laborers.
It doesn't care anymore about human rights, even though it publicly makes
statements of the opposite, just to give them publicity.
It doesn't care about social issues.
It's creating a new class of slaves: those dependent on welfare.
It only cooperates with black people if that's good for its image.
In short, it has turned to the near-extreme right, supported by and supporting
  Big Money and Religion.
Its most prominent exponent is Ronald Reagan.

That party is called the Republican Party.
