Map of Arms Race ------------------------- President Reagan's latest proposal to "exchange 5 year arms plans" with the Soviets indicates his intention to continue the current nuclear arms race. If Reagan actually intended to stop the nuclear arms race, then there would be no 5 year arms plans to exchange. But this should be no surprise--Ronald Reagan has never supported a bilateral halt to the arms race, nor a single bilateral nuclear arms treaty. Reagan has accused the Nuclear Freeze movement supported by 70% of Americans of being "dupes of Moscow". Despite an overwhelming vote by the Republican controlled Senate calling on him to present two of the five nuclear arms control treaties to the Senate for ratification Reagan has refused to do so. Moreover his administration has already announced their intention to break SALT II in 1985. Reagan's proposed "Star Wars" system would not only bring nuclear war into outer space but violate the ABM treaty. For President Reagan to suggest a friendly exchange of "maps" of the future arms race does not show any desire for genuine arms control efforts- but shows his intention to continue the current unprecedented arms race which imperils the future of humanity.
