The officials are quoted to have emphasized that the system was supplemental to the existing "triad" of strategic nuclear force in that, unlike the other systems, this would be a system intended for use for retal- iation in the aftermath of a nuclear exchange. The Air Force is reported to have spent $10 million studying the project in 1984, proposing an additional $10 million for 1985 and $20 million for 1986. Five years would be required to complete the system, estimated to cost up to $50 billion. Technology is claimed to exist to build the base, which would be constructed in the 1990s. I thought that people on this list might be interested in hearing about this major new proposal, which has been dubbed the Secure Reserve Force.
