I largely agree with roy@eisx that the Soviets have no real designs on the US, at least territorially, and that they do pose a threat to Europe. He did not address what our attitude toward that should be, but I feel that this should be considered a European problem, as I may have said before on the net. They can't trust the US to push the button to save them if the US cities are threatened. Neither can they trust us not to push it and bring them into the war if the Soviets and us mixed it up. They need to work out their own INDEPENDENT deterrent, run by Europeans exclusively. France probably has the right idea. If the Soviets thought they had the guts to blow Moscow away if the tanks were to roll the tanks wouldn't, since the Soviets would have too much to lose even if they "won" the war. But if the Soviets think they can bluff out a weak president (like Carter for instance) they might do it if they think there's a weak finger on our trigger. In short, the sooner we get out or the Europeans kick us out the better off we all will be. I'm sure there are opposing views.
