[net.politics] Soviet Strategies

I largely agree with roy@eisx that the Soviets have no real
designs on the US, at least territorially, and that they do
pose a threat to Europe. He did not address what our attitude
toward that should be, but I feel that this should be
considered a European problem, as I may have said before on the
net. They can't trust the US to push the button to
save them if the US cities are threatened. Neither can they
trust us not to push it and bring them into the war if the
Soviets and us mixed it up. They need to work out their own
INDEPENDENT deterrent, run by Europeans exclusively. France
probably has the right idea. If the Soviets thought they
had the guts to blow Moscow away if the tanks were to roll
the tanks wouldn't, since the Soviets would have too much
to lose even if they "won" the war. But if the Soviets
think they can bluff out a weak president (like Carter for
instance) they might do it if they think there's a weak
finger on our trigger. In short, the sooner we get out
or the Europeans kick us out the better off we all will be.
I'm sure there are opposing views.
