>The "discussion" about "Reagan's joke" is beating around the bush. >We should face the fact that the present President of the United States is a >man who gets a kick out of the idea of throwing bombs on the Soviet Union, >not a man who considers nuclear attack as a moral and practical >impossibility and nuclear retaliation as a horrible last resort. He has made >it clear that he looks forward to WW III as to a Carnival and is eager to >play a leading role in the greatest horror show ever. I grew up and lived in the Soviet Union until three years ago when I moved to the USA. Here I found the country where its leaders are allowed to make jokes of any kinds. This is the country where anyone can joke on any subject without being afraid. It is in the Soviet Union, that hearing any joke like the one said by the President, people reported to the police in order to obtain some benefits - for common people it was a money reward, for the polititians - political. I strongly believe in the American democracy. It can survive any political turmoils and problems. It can even survive the President's jokes. Though, in my personal opinion, based on the years spent under the Soviet regime, the strength is the only base for peace with the USSR. Leo Simon decwrl!rhea!elwood!simon
