[net.politics] The polls don't mean a thing.

The last California election had Tom Bradley ahead by a
substantial margin. Now we have Dukemejian (sp? Duke).
The explaination was that the anti gun control people had
come out in force to vote against a gun control proposition.
While they were there, they voted against Bradley (who is black).

If everyone who had something to loose by 4 more years
of Reagan voted against him, he wouldn't stand a chance.

An anecdote for those of you out there who pay attention to the polls:

The last gubernatorial race in Texas was an interesting one. One contender
was the incumbent Bill Clements, a cantankerous old reactionary who had
outspent the Democrats by a huge margin to become the first Republican
governor in the state since Reconstruction. His opponent was Mark White, who
had passed the years of Gov. Bill's reign as Attorney General, making him the
state's top Democratic elected official.

The very day before the election, the polls gave the Republican an eight-
point lead.

The Democrat won.

Ditto Mondale. Ditto Bergland. Ditto me. Ditto you.

When voting against a politician, it isn't which one will hurt you
when they're in office, it's which one will hurt you *least*.
