[net.politics] Crazee Chuckie Percy

jj@rabbit.UUCP (11/08/84)

Well, Dearest Ronnie Rizzo, since "Crazee Chuckie Percy" was defeated,
I hope you're bloody well happy that Jesse Helms will be the NEW
chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee. Gee, Ronnie baby,
I'd think that you would be cheering as loudly for Percy as
anyone else. Why do you think that the "new right" in Percy's
district voted for the liberal? Why? Because Percy was far
too moderate. Helms was their choice, and they got their way.
What ARE you happy about, Rizzo? What do you know about Helms?
What do you know about Senate Bill 1? BLEAUGH!

1986- just two years away. Will we make it?

P.S. Contrary to the above impressions, I consider myself a conservative.
I do NOT consider myself "new right", which is pretty obvious. Anyone
else for moderation on this net? Anyone? Hello? Hello? Testing,
1,2,3, testing, is this keyboard on?

Helms has promised not to take the job. He was vulnerable in North
Carolina only because Hunt was almost able to make the charge that he
served the national New Right rather than his state stick; had not
Helms consistently emphasized the importance of the Agriculture
committee (and his committment to it), it is likely he would have been
defeated. I don't think Helms will dare switch committees so soon
after his scare.

Next in line is Lugar of Indiana. Not as loud as Helms, though the
New Right could live with him. However, he is seeking the post of
Majority Leader, and should he succeed, the man next in line is...

Mathias of Maryland! The next best thing to Weicker in the Senate!
Gosh, I hope Lugar gets Baker's job.

I can't speak for Rizzo, but I voted for Paul Simon (that is, against
Percy), and though I'm not at all happy about the Foreign Relations
Committee succession, I'm glad to get rid of that sleaze. Yeah, I
know, he used to be an upstanding, independent-minded guy. Well, he
stopped. This ain't net.politics, so I'll spare you the statistics.
Just wish you'd been here in Illinois, jj, to see all the political
commercials. Incidentally, R. Viguerie and Co. did *NOT* back the
liberal (Simon), they backed the *Libertarian*. Simon won by 60,000
votes; the Libertarian got about 50,000 I think.

Incidentally, I'm convinced the New Right withdrew support for Percy
(which may have had a boomerang effect--who knows?) only because
they wanted to elevate Helms, figuring that if Helms also lost, the
Senate would be pretty well gone for them. Enough.

If you think Helms is gonna let mathias head up CFR you
are crazy! Helms I am told will take over a fat subcommittee
chairmanship on Tobacco products, and take CFR chairmanship,
so Lugar can take the Maj. Leadership. Helms doesnt
like Dole all that much either. Ha! We may just see
the senate not ratify a Reagan administration arms control treaty.....

Have fun with jumpin' Jesse! Raygun courted & got supported by the
New Right; now the twit in the White House (& by extension, "conser-
vatives") must lie down with the Terrible Tarheel! Helms offers the
marvelous prospect of holding up every RR ambassadorial & Dept. of
State candidate, just for the hell of it!

So Illini ultras voted for Simon? Well, maybe devilish NC liberals
voted for Jesse! :=( (You were in jest, weren't you? Simon's margin
was the Chicago vote, ethnic, black & urban liberal.)

Enjoy FOUR MORE YEARS with Everlovin' Blue-eyed Jesse! (To learn
exactly what you're in for, get a hold of someone who grew up in
the vicinity of Winston-Salem plus a prescription for tranquillizers).
