[net.politics] Reagan's Defense Spending/Getting left out

(exterminate....EXTERMINATE!!!!)

I happen to belong to an organization called the Civil Air Patrol, henceforth
referred to as CAP. It is a corporation which is the official auxiliary of the
USAF. In Reagan's defense budget, only a few million dollars out of his huge
budget goes to CAP, the vast majority of this to pay the USAF personnel who
serve as liaisons at wing(state),region, and national level. I am not advocating
the elimination of these positions; they are a necessity. What I would like to
have happen is the increase of CAP's share in the defense budget for the express
purpose of modernizing aging vehicles and equipment at ALL levels within the
organization. Rumor has it that the budget is to provide for the purchase of
basic equipment for all cadet members. I would like to see this happen,be-
cause in my own experience, equipment and uniforms are priced exorbitantly at
civilian stores, and access to military clothing sales is rather difficult due
to travel time, etc. The supply system has become rather less constipated; how-
ever, much is still needed.

I have been a member of CAP for almost six years now, and I fail to see why
the Federal Government is apparently unwilling to spend money on an organization

whose mission is to SAVE LIVES, while it is more than willing to waste money
on corrupt defense contractors. If anyone can see the benefits of neglecting
an organization with over 67,000 members from all walks of life, responsible
for saving almost 100 lives per year, and whose members respond under adverse
conditions to rescue people from air crashes, natural disasters, etc., then
please point them out to me. I don't see any.
