[net.politics] What is a Nicaragua?

Some of you misspell "Sandinistas" as "Sandanistas", thus revealing that:

   1. Television is your sole source of news.

   2. You either don't know who Sandino was or don't know that the
Sandinistas take their name from him; hence you don't know the
first thing about them. Or do you think their hero's name was
       "Sandano"?

Some of you have also had trouble spelling Somoza and Nicaragwa---
Nicaraugua---oh well, it's one of those banana republics, they're all the
same anyway.

Recently we have been treated on the net to the "Contradora" agreement.
No doubt this refers to the contras' plan for peace in Central America.
Paging Henry Kissinger....

   A mild suggestion:

   1. Become a regular reader of a good newspaper or newsmagazine.

   2. Find Nicaragua on the map. (Hint: It's very close to
       Washington, D.C.)

   3. Amaze your friends with your newly acquired knowledge of Central
       America.

So debate has degenerated to this:

You misspelled, ergo you are ignorant, ergo I am right.

Priggishness deluxe!

I think it's about every 6 months or so that we seem to get this spelling
thing on the net. Why don't we take it to net.spell or something.

[I'm not arguing with Richard's idea, just that we're not trying to construct
legal documents here...]

I sincerely doubt that "Contra peace plan" was a misspelling. Also, there
is probably a high correlation between correct spelling of foreign names and
knowledge of foreign relations (typos excluded, of course).
