News from the sanctuary front: Yesterday, January 24, Jack Elder, church-worker, Vietnam veteran and determined sanctuary activist was acquitted! His was the first big sanctuary case to come to trial. He faced 15 years jail under indictment by the Reagan administration Justice Department for the heinous crime of driving a Central American refugee to a bus station! The trial took place in Corpus Cristi, Texas. It appears as though the government has overlooked a key factor in its attempt to smash the Church-based sanctuary movement. It will be extremely difficult to convince the ordinary decent Americans on a jury that helping out Central American refugees is anything remotely resembling a crime. Numerous other sanctuary cases, including another indictment of Elder will be coming to trial soon. -Andy Berman ----------------------------------------------- -- -------------------------------------------------- "My life is so complicated, it's a good thing I'm such a simple person that I can understand it" -Ed Balchowski
