[net.politics] Weinberger off the Wall

schneider@vlnvax.DEC (02/07/85)

I would just like to know...is there anyone who really believes what
Caspar Weinberger says anymore? I mean he went on the tube the other
night and offered an argument that holds no water as to why the
Pentagon's budget must rise unlike any other. If I must I will
refute his arguments, but they were so silly it barely seems necessary.
What does this man have any regard for, aside from weaponry? As if
his request for financing wasn't outrageous enough, he then went and
practically accused the senators (who found his ideas off base) of treason!
Not literally, but he said something to that effect through one of his
puppets.

Oh, but I don't doubt that he'll be able to rally the ultra-conservatives
over to his side. Anyone see George Will's column yesterday? At last
someone other than a bumbling uniform went and rationalized the waste of
the Pentagon. You know...the $100 hammer,$1700 coffee pot, $97 screw.
Will claimed the Grace commission (the people that actually checked
where the money was going) of delibrately overlooking fancy accounting
so as to make these exaggerated claims. So you see, there really is a
good reason(:->).

Let's just hope this country's budget isn't decided by people like
Weinberger. One gets the feeling that this zealot won't be satisfied
until there is no money spent for social causes, all for militaristic
causes. What else can I say, except even Barry Goldwater now thinks
the Pentagon is overdoing it.
