[net.politics] Sevener, Economics, and History

mck@ratex.UUCP (Daniel Kian Mc Kiernan) (02/09/85)

Before I began contributing to the net, Sevener was in the habit of
buttressing his arguments with bad economics. When an economist came on
line, he first tried to deal with it by asking what he thought were tough
questions (that he thought them tough demonstrated how meager was his
background). His questions were met with rapid and forthright answers.
Now Sevener has taken to shrill denunciations of economists and of economic
analysis (this reversal demonstrates that Sevener is settled upon his
conclusions, and searches for premises to generate them), and seeks to
buttress his arguments with bad history.
I have elsewhere mentioned that my area of special interest is
cliometrics. Perhaps Sevener should be made aware of the definition of
the term. Cliometrics is the econometric analysis of history. What this
implies is that I either know the facts and figures, or know where to find
them. Of course, merely claiming that I'm into cliometrics doesn't prove
that I really know my economic history, but if Sevener insists on using bad
history to reach silly conclusions, he will get ample demonstration of my
background.
Perhaps Sevener will engage in another reversal, and claim that
'History is bunk', but I supect that such a reversal will serve to fully
discredit him in the eyes of net-users -- assuming that he has any credit
left!
By the way, the proper abbreviation of 'Mc Kiernan' is 'McK', not
'Mck', but if your system doesn't recognize the uppercase K, don't worry
about it.

                                        Happy to oblige,
                                        Daniel Kian Mc Kiernan
