Dave:

Many thanks for your well made points and corrections of my posting on
whatever it is that those 'phones' speak up in our next state.

It was very interesting to read. My friends from up there do like their
children being taught "francais standard" by immersion. I still hear them
say the francophones, or whatever, don't! Any word on that? I mean if they
make "more fun of 'francais standard' than the French do of them, then where
does that leave them - the 'phones' I mean? You didn't address that.

Gee, Canada. I see all those adds on the telly saying come on up. There's
so much room up there. And resources. Wouldn't you guys like to be our next
state?? Aren't you guys goin' to the right like us down here? Why it would
be a marriage made in heaven.

Anyway, I still say the 'francophones' have done it to themselves and cut off
their noses with insisting on using 'French' as a official language. By the
way, there are a lot of 'Frenchies' down here - we imported them to work in
the mills a while back. Some of them are my friends. Really. They complain
of an image as 'niggers of the north' sometimes. I have some . . . now I don't
know what to call them . . . - French Canadian decendant American, how's that,
friends who won't let their children speak that 'phone' stuff because they
say it is ignorant. This creates friction between the grandparents and them,
of course, but they want their children to speak English or 'standard' French.

Waterloo. Quite a few of you on the net. Where do you go after you finish
there - Elba?? Ha Ha. It's a joke, see.

I also know some people from up there who would LIKE to see themselves become
part of the good ole US of A.!! That's just so you don't think I'm a crank
of one. I understand the provences are not getting along so well with the
central gov.,eh? The provinces too.

Well, regards,

Ken Arndt

Obviously we worship hold different religious views if that's your idea
of heaven. However, we *are* working on it. But we still need to
(1) Boost our crime rate by an incredible amount. Especially our violent
crime rate. I'm afraid it's just way below the American standard.
(2) Give everybody handguns so that we can kill each other accidently much
faster. [Guns don't kill kids. Kids kill kids.]
(3) Up our racial hatred level by a massive factor.
(4) Increase our knee-jerk anti-communist reaction by several orders of
    magnitudes.
(5) Increase our willingness to let the poor starve.
(6) Build massive amounts of ghettos
(7) Increase our arson rate. (Is North Tonawanda still standing?)
(8) Increase our defense spending.
(9) Increase our dollar. (Oh well...)

In a country of 25 million, you get every type of crack-pot. Besides,
have they ever *lived* in the States? The idea of being fearful of walking
in any part of a city (eg. Toronto, pop. 3Meg) is so unreal, that they might
not realize this seems to be the case in several American cities.

Canada would be incredibly boring if everybody agreed with everyone, and
that includes the provinces and the federal gov't. Your timing is bad,
however. The provinces and the fed. gov't have gotten closer this last
month or so than they've ever been in years.

As for going right-wing, well we Canadians have our own definition of
right and left wing. Basically, the politics rarely changes on more than
the superficial level. We are a land without extremes (for the most part).
There is something nice about mediocrity. I think it has something to do
with the fact that you can afford to be the nice guy on occasion. It doesn't
fall to us to support gov'ts killing their own citizens to protect themselves
against the communist menace. Maybe it has to be done by someone (Although
I have my doubts) but I am thankful it will never have to be us.

In case this article sounds too anti-American, my apologies, but Mr. Arndt
*does* have the ability to say things in need of strong rebuttal. I am
certainly glad that the USA has chosen to be the world super-power. It
means that the rest of us don't have to be totally ruthless to survive.
And if history shows anything, either you have to be totally ruthless,or
under the protection of a country that is. The States have my gratitude,
as long as they don't force us to become them.
