[net.politics] Calif VFW Against US Policy in Central America, strange happenings

**

Santa Cruz Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5888 is "99%
certain" to get kicked out of the VFW organization. They
wrote a letter opposing US intervention in Central America.
The VFW is a traditional and consertive organization whose
national policy is to support US policy in Centeral America.

It is not surprising in Santa Cruz county, of course,
last year's Santa Cruz mayor was a gay socialist, there are two
colleges full of students, and there is always plenty
of left wing political activity going on. However, there is
a sidelight this is very strange.

Here is part of an article from the "Santa Cruz Seninel" March 17,
1985 p. 1:

For someone who has been a longtime member of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars, the resolution opposing
U.S. intervention in Central America by local
Post 5888 might be seen as a betrayal of VFW
	traditions.

The national VFW leadership might revoke the post's
charter as punishment for its action.

But something else is happening, too. [sic]
World War II veterans, long considered the
standard bearers of national VFW policy, are
joining the post since the resolution was made
	public.

	 . . . .

. . . the nature of the local membership has
	chaged dramatically. . . . "85-90 percent of
our members used to be Vietnam vets. Now we
have a 50-50 balance with the World War II
men that have signed up, many of them for the
	first time."

That is pretty much the opposite of what my presuppositions
would lead me to expect.
