I'll argue with that. Here are the reasons why I think this is the
most superfluous assumption I have seen in quite a while.
By "Marxism" I universally would mean Soviet model (not IRS as Black did).
That is what Nazis themselves meant.
If that's not what you had in mind - sorry. Throw away rest of it.

1) "whole struggle" is mainly USSR-Germany military actions.
Everything else is completely dwarfed by these events,
so that's what I will concentrate on.

2) Those "Marxist" ideas you talking about were NEVER a driving
force for communist states. Ok? USSR is known for exiling
a people (Crimean Tatars) from their native land to Siberia (they
are still there), for murdering Afghans (you probably respect
them for that more then Afghans), for persecution of Jews,
forcing russification of all ethnic groups that comprise
   the country's population.

3) The war was the struggle for power and influence between
two expansionist totalitarian powers (two - just to keep it
on our Marxism-Nazism level). Just like many times before.
   Also read "1984".

4) Many important similarities between the two systems:
party elite, totalitarian government, hopes of world
domination, persecution of own population (social enemies
being exterminated in USSR, racial in Germany) - in
   other words - use scapegoats to unite the masses;
   promises of upcoming paradise;
move to control the economy and eliminate middle class; on, on and on.

5) Before actual military Marxism-Nazism conflict broke out (1941)
USSR and Germany were getting along just fine:
signed peace pact, split Poland, Germany enslaved Europe, USSR
grabbed some Baltic people's states. The war broke out because
of CLASH OF POWER AND ECONOMIC interests, not
because SU was given to some silly-assed equality
ideas. Just like it always does.
For examples look at USA and South Africa, USSR
   and China.
Ideological differences are enough to accuse bunch of communists of arson
of Reichstag (sp?), to create more scapegoats and
diversions for masses, but it would not be a
reason for outbreak of world war! Not even with religions
   wars.

Hopefully, yes.
It might begin with somebody trying to justify having
such low an opinion of a people, that combined creators and
puppets of a bloody regime deserve A LOT more respect.
Or somebody offering a bunch of laughable excuses to justify
being pissed at a people.
Next thing might be some energetic follower who says
"they've been sucking our blood long enough",..

     I guess I feel weary
