I guess that EuroCommies don't count here...say, the Italian gov't
coalitions of the late 70's with Berlinguer....?

Oh, those aren't *real* Marxist-Leninists. Seriously, folks-why do
we adhere so rigidly to this kind of monolithic view of *both* the
first and second worlds? Seems like most of the net has little trouble
accepting the conflicting goals and policies of the free world, but
we automatically buy the Reaganista line that the Left is backed by this
monolithic thing (parenthetically, the Ruskies are "orthodox" simply by
virtue of being "bigger"...as opposed to Tito, Hoxha, Deng, or whomever).

It might be more useful/interesting to discuss the long term prospects for
the current varieties of the Left. The Brits fume and languish, the Italians
bicker. The Yugoslavs and Hungarians are having their own little party, no
one invites the Bulgarians out anymore (certainly not if the Pope's around),
and it looks like the face of The Force of Evil must reckon with Shi'ite
discontents within its own borders. This has got to be a *bit* more intriguig-
ing....
