[net.politics] UC Protests against Apartheid

NOTE: this is also in uc.general,uc.news,ca.politics

Here's news from the sit-in at UCSD as of Sunday, April 28th. We
are now in the fifth day of sleeping in front of the newly
re-christened "Winnie Mandela" Library. Our sleep-in count has been
245 Wed., 135 Thurs., 145 Fri., and 90 last night. We expect more
tonight when the black student union will join us in demonstrating
student opposition to apartheid and UC investments in corporations
doing business in South Africa.

Our other events have ranged from a rally (2000 attending) last
Wednesday to a teach-in featuring faculty and community speakers on
Friday. Our faculty support has been good, with many offering to
participate in our next rally and others helping us with donations
($200+ so far). We have been well fed by community markets and
local vegetarian restaurants and (surprise) the campus food
services.

As to the future, we'll probably be here for a while. We are trying
to work towards a general strike, which would be most effective if it
were system-wide. We are flexible but are looking at Monday (May 6).
Please, any of you at other campuses, send us your input.

If people want information on apartheid, UC investments in the
Republic of South Africa, nifty quotes from Nelson Mandela we have
a series of documents that can be typed into the system (we wrote
it... no copyright problems).

That's about it for now. We eagerly await your comments.
