[net.politics] "Overthrow," a Yipster Times publication

riddle@ut-sally.UUCP (Prentiss Riddle) (06/20/85)

After my posting of a few days ago on "Komputers and the Klan," I've been
asked to provide a pointer to my source, the Yippies' newspaper "Overthrow."
The address is:

		Overthrow
		P.O.Box 392 Canal St. Station
		New York, NY	10012

An annual subscription costs $10. I can't find printed anywhere how many
issues that buys you, but the copy I have is labeled "April/May" and the
cover price is $1, so I would expect between six and ten issues a year.

As I said before, I certainly don't agree with everything printed in
"Overthrow," but it makes mighty fine reading. The Yippies are also going
by the name of the "North American Green Party" these days and attempting to
portray themselves as the equivalent of the Greens of West Germany. I have
some strong doubts as to their being the proper inheritors of the "green"
label -- the Yippies aren't a real political party, are a tiny organization
next to their European counterparts, and seem to put more emphasis on their
own agenda (the legalization of marijuana, for instance) than on the
environmentalism which is the backbone of green politics -- but I'm trying
to keep my mind open. (I also have some nagging doubts as to the depth of
the Yippies' commitment to nonviolence.)

Be that as it may, "Overthrow" is worth reading if only as an interesting
phenomenon, an eighties underground newspaper. Have fun.
