From American Medical News, June 7, 1985: A tobacco industry proposal to run cigarette label warnings simultaneously, rather than rotating every three months, has been rejected by the FTC. The tobacco industry claimed that the quarterly printing would cost them an extra $12million. The FTC does not have the discretion to change a statue passed by Congress, said FTC spokesman Judy Pond. The FTC, however, plans to ask Congress to review the statue to see if label modifications are acceptable. The warnings, which will be rotated quarterly, are: * Smoking causes lung cancer, heart disease, and emphysema, and may complicate pregnancy. * Quitting smoking now greatly reduces serious risk to your health. * Smoking by pregnant women may result in fetal injury, premature birth, and low birth weight. * Cigarette smoke contains Carbon Monoxide. -- Craig Werner !philabs!aecom!werner "The world is just a straight man for you sometimes"

Thank goodness for the FTC, for looking out for the interests of the people who don't yet know that smoking is hazardous to one's health. BOTH OF THEM!
