For those of you following the debate over the selection of the New York
State Insect, this news item appeared in the 7/1/85 issue of _The_Buffalo_

State Senate Kills Ladybug, Uncle Sam Bills

ALBANY (AP) -- The ladybug was crushed and Uncle Sam wasn't wanted.
The State Senate ended the main portion of its 1985 session at 2:17 a.m.
Sunday without acting on a bill to make the ladybug the official state bug
and on another measure to make Uncle Sam the official state patriot. The
State Assembly attracted national attention recently when it approved the
designations.
Dissenting lawmakers said the proposals were silly, but didn't have the
strength to block the measures in the Assembly.
The Uncle Sam named in the legislation is Sam Wilson of Troy, who supplied
meat to the U.S. Army in New York during the War of 1812. He later became
the model for the stern-faced bearded man in red, white and blue who
symbolized the United States.

"Well, no, we don't have _Rarnaby_Budge_ by Charles Dikkens with two
k's the famous Dutch author, and perhaps to save time I should add that
we don't have _Carnaby_Fudge_ by Darles Chickens, or _Farnbarous_Snudge_
by Miles Pickens or even _Stickwick_Stapers_ by Tharles Wickens with
four "m"'s and a silent "q"! Why don't you try W. H. Smith's!"
"I did. They sent me here."
  "Did they."
