[net.politics] Query: Shiite casualties in US naval bombardment

al@aurora.UUCP (Al Globus) (07/10/85)

If I remember correctly, the US Navy shelled the hills around Beruit for
a couple of weeks before the Marines were attacked with the truck bomb.
Recently, I saw a piece in the SF Chronical that indicated that the
villages shelled were Shiite. I remember TV pictures of destroyed houses
but I can't remember casualty figures. I think it was in the hundreds, and
I know the guns weren't spotted very well and therefore were probably
pretty inaccurate. In any case, if anyone knows how many Shiites were
killed and wounded or lost their homes to US naval gunfire I think the
net might be interested. It's obviously relevant to the recent hijacking.

--------
I don't know how many people were hurt by US naval gunfire, but for what
it's worth, one of the returned hostages was quoted saying that his captors
kept mentioning the shelling by the U. S. S. New Jersey.

Your memory is right on.

Who cares? They were ONLY Shiites.

It will probably make no difference to the apologists for Shiite and
Muslim barbarism but the US Navy shelled Druze positions. Shiite and
Sunnites often do not consider Druze Muslims and have a history of
slaughtering them when the relative strenght is in Muslim favor.

I should point out the Shiites and Sunnites have long had a history of
random slaughter of non-muslims and they really need no excuse to commit
attrocities on non-muslims.
