The media took scant notice. The most massive air bombardment in the history of the Western Hemisphere continued in El Salvador as US supplied planes and bombs attacked people in zones of rebel control. The media took absolutely no notice. Congress just authorized CIA funding to overthrow the governments of Angola and Nicaragua. Barely a word on the net. But the media and those who control the public consciousness go to town over the reformulation of a soft-drink. And, alas, we are taken in, and pretend to care about such nonsense. The most massive air bombardment in the > history of the Western Hemisphere continued in El Salvador as US supplied > planes and bombs attacked people in zones of rebel control. The media I think that the inhabitants of {Dresden, Berlin, London, Munich, etc.} would disagree. When you say "Western Hemisphere," I assume you include the entirity of "Western Civilization," which includes most of Europe. I think "in the history of the Western Hemisphere" is taking things a bit far. Try "In the history of the American Hemisphere" and I might not disagree, mainly because it is the ONLY bombardment that has happened in the American hemisphere. With the possible exclusion of some Civil War episodes. But that's because they didn't have Howitzers then. I apologize for my previous posting. I am sure that Mr. Berman is quite sincere, and I display only ignorance by my statements. My only excuse is that I had just come from a rather disturbing day to relax at my machine, only to see someone write what a moral brute I am. I am sure I misinterpreted the original article, and promise the net not to allow my anger to push the "F" key again. Bill Oliver

Mr. Berman may or may not be sincere, but he clearly portrays himself as self-righteous, obnoxious (after all, we're all reading net.misc.coke 'cause we want to hear his moralizing, right?) and above all, rather silly. But the media and those who control the public consciousness > go to town over the reformulation of a soft-drink. You're right. But consider this: About three weeks ago, while my office mate was calling the White House to complain about their geo-political stance, I was calling 1-800-GET-COKE to complain about the new coke. Results? I got a free coupon for six bottles of coke and the satisfaction (this week) that my insignificant voice was heard. What impact do people who are alarmed about a political issue have? (Don't answer this, I know the answer already. That is why I called up 1-800-GET-COKE....) -- bill peter ihnp4!lanl!wkp "To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance." --Oscar Wilde

Wrongo - the Western Hemisphere is (technically) that hemisphere containing everything east of the International Date Line and west of the Greenwich Meridian, so it would contain part of London (and Ireland, etc.) - but in practice it is North and South America, Greenland, and the Caribbean. Never heard the term "American Hemisphere" used before.

This discussion is going to THREE newsgroups. Now that there's a special newsgroup for this topic, how about editing your 'Newsgroups' line, people? It's easy. If you don't know how, I'll be glad to give you a lesson :-) Unfortunately, many of us don't share your enthusiasm for the history and philosophy of Co-Cola (NET.PHILOSOPHY???) -- Cheers, Bill Ingogly

Mencken who defined a Puritan as "someone who lives in dread fear that someone, somewhere, is having a good time"? In every political movement (alas, even in the libertarian movement) there seems to be some ill-humored types who insist that the whole world needs to spend every day hard at work solving problems; these same twerps view every form of recreation as a crime against humanity.
