[net.politics] The Turks and the Parthenon

jefff@cadovax.UUCP (Jeffery H. Fields) (07/30/85)

The Parthenon was not blow up by the Turks as cdp@uiucdcsb.Uiuc.ARPA asserts.
It was none other than the British under the leadership of that fearless leader
Lord Nelson that shelled the Parthenon. The Brits shelled it because the Turks
were using it as a munition dump. The Turks believed that no civilized nation
would attack such a monument in Western Civilization. Nelson, acting as a true
paragon of civilization looted the Acropolis and sent back most of the statuary
to England.
