Submitted for your inspection... the latest from my closet of anxieties... stop me if you've heard this one... The year is 1987... U.S. President Ronald Reagan dies after a long battle with cancer... George Bush takes over the reins of power... With the Great Communicator dead, the American people perceive more clearly the right-wing policies of the U.S. government... The Republicans start to slip in the polls... George Bush gracefully declines to run in 1988, knowing that they would get decimated... And so who does the Republican Party push into the Presidential race?... That's right, NANCY REAGAN!! Don't laugh, it could happen! If the G.C. bites the biscuit, the Republicans will be in great need of someone closely associated with the Reagan *image*, since that's basically what the Presidency is based on. (Besides, Nancy has about as much qualification to be President as Ronnie does... :-) And I understand that Nancy already has a lot of clout in the Oval Office. I can see it now... Endorsements flood in from Phyllis Schlafly and her buddies as they re-activate their anti-ERA political network: "Nancy Reagan, having fulfilled her motherly and wifely duties in life, is now free to pursue her political career" -- though not, of course, without a frequent tear in her eye and a wish that Ronnie "were here to guide me." Yes, the death of Ronald Reagan might just be the best thing that could happen to the Republican Party in 1987 or so, because it will give them the chance they need to keep the Reagan *magic*, the Reagan *image*, the Reagan *politics*, the Reagan *NAME* IN POWER UNTIL 1996!!! Put that in your closet of anxieties, Binkley... Nancy Reagan has the best chance of *anyone* to become the first woman President of the U.S.! --Jamie. >Oh, come off it! This is typical wishful thinking on your part and >it shows absolutely no understanding of Republicans, conservatives, >and the political process as practiced in this country (did I see >that you sent this from Canada? :-), by *any* party, including >socialists and libertarians. > >Nancy Reagan?!? Ho ho ha ha ho hee hee hee haaaaaa haha hoho ha.. >That's rich! It isn't impossible, merely ludicrous. Have you forgotten when George Wallace's wife succeeded him as Governor of Alabama. Didn't the wife of the congressman of the congressman shot down on KAL 007 run for his seat? It is not uncommon for a Governor to appoint a congressman's wife to fill out a term if he dies. Having a wife follow her husband into political office isn't all that uncommon. What do you think Elenor's chances would have been if she had had the democratic nomination in 48? If you were to make a list of the most likely people to succeed Ronald Reagan, I think Nancy would be on the top fifty at least.

For what Tom Gill has to say on this matter, see my recent posting to net.bizarre.

Everyone KNOWS the first woman President will be a Republican all right, but it will be Jeane Kirkpatrick.
