For all of you who fear censorship by the "Extreme Right," here's a few examples of what we can expect from the our dear friends on the Left. Below are some extracts from an article from the August 26, 1985 edition of the Spotlight (reprinted by permission, Copyright 1985 by Cordite Fidelity Corp., 300 Independence Ave., SE, Washington, DC 20003. All rights reserved.) "LIBERALS BIG ON CENSORSHIP" "The stereotype of the snob and cultural kill-joy in our society is that of the intellectual right-winger. The blameless advocate of free speech is always the Liberal on TV shows and other Establishment portrayals of the censorship issues. "Censorship incidence is up in both the United States and Europe and contrary to cherished Establishment myths, most of the censors are not nationalist rightists or Populists but Marxists and leftists. "* In London, Ontario recently, rioting Marxist demonstrators at the University of Western Ontario forced the cancellation of a lecture by Dr. Arthur Jensen. Jensen, a professor of educational psychology at the University of California, has researched the links between genetic back- ground and IQ test scores. The demonstrators chanted that Jensen had 'no right to speak.' "* In Murmansk, USSR, two Christian folk singers, Sergei Timokhin and Valeri Barinov, were sentenced to 2 1/2 years at hard labor for composing and performing original Christian ballads. Prior to sentencing, the two had been confined to an experimental Soviet mental hospital for 'drug therapy' and 'tests.' "* In Oberammeragu, West Germany, the city's medieval Passion Play has been expurgated under pressure from Zionist groups, who take offense at its faithful depiction of gospel accounts of the crucifixion of Christ. The centuries-old play was revised once in 1970 but still does not satisfy the pro-Israelis, who have hinted that the play 'may have to be suppressed altogether.' "* MIT Professor Noam Chomsky's invitation to speak before the graduating class of the Cornell Medical School was withdrawn after Israeli partisans demanded that Chomsky (who is Jewish) be silenced. Last October Chomsky was disinvited at the University of Michigan after pro-Israeli groups threatened severe measures if his speech was sponsored by the school's Near Eastern Studies Department. Chomsky is the author of the definitive assessment of war Zionism, 'The Fateful Triangle.' Chomsky's fact-filled lectures draw huge campus crowds---hence the pressure to silence him. "* In Torrence, California, Irv Rubin, the National Director of the terroristic Jewish Defense League (JDL), is demanding that the city expel the Institute for Historical Review (IHR) by formal ordinance. the IHR's 'crime' is that it insists on exercising its right to publish historical material reporting facts and findings which are different from the Establishment's orthodoxy. Four years ago a man sued the IHR for scorning 'established historical fact,' a cause of action theretofore known only behind the Iron Curtain. "* In Alabama, Rev. Edward P. Markley was forbidden from speaking in public against abortion for the next five years by Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Raymond H. Pearson. Markley has been instrumental in talking women out of aborting their unborn as a result of his sidewalk counseling sessions." .... The article continues to some length with several more similar examples. What scares me is that nobody cares. Very few people have enough "Sack" to speak out against this kind of crap. And when we do we get the lame comments about "Don't P___ them off. We might want to sell them a [FILL IN THE BLANK] someday." Or "You don't have the right to say that!" I guess the way it works is that it's perfectly acceptable to bash the United States and the Conservative right, but totally crass and down- right racist to criticize the Left and other countries. It's perfectly OK for 2.5% of the population to dictate to 97.5%, right? (Say, come to think about it, isn't that what's happening in South Africa?) So stick this one in your ears, Children. If you want a strictly Left-wing net, go ahead and have it. I have other more important media to publish in. --Don Black

Most of the Marxists I know would hit you if you accused them of being "liberal," and most of the liberals I know don't like Zionism much more than you do (although they don't usually combine it with anti-Semitism). Of the examples you cited, the only one which *might* be a case of censorship by a "liberal" was the sentencing of the fellow in Alabama not to speak in public on abortion for five years (and given the inconsistency of the rest of your article, I can't help but wonder if you're telling us the whole story). It seems to me that a number of "liberal" organizations -- like the American Civil Liberties Union -- have been taking pretty courageous stands defending the rights of people with views like yours to express them freely. I am also thinking of a case right here in Austin, Texas, where some minority activists are absolutely furious with our "liberal" City Council for letting the KKK march -- at a huge cost for police protection, I might add. The "liberals" are bending over backwards for you, Don. You ought to be thanking them for it. --- Prentiss Riddle ("Aprendiz de todo, maestro de nada.") --- {ihnp4,harvard,seismo,gatech}!ut-sally!riddle riddle@ut-sally.UUCP --- riddle@ut-sally.ARPA, riddle%zotz@ut-sally, riddle%im4u@ut-sally

People who oppose Noam Chomsky for his views on Israel can hardly be called leftists. Chmosky himself is the consummate American leftist. You're getting confused Don. Zionist != Leftist.
