[net.politics] "American" being ethnocentric

ins_akaa@jhunix.UUCP (Kenneth Adam Arromdee) (11/02/85)

I'll say it again: "Ecuador" means equator in Spanish, but nobody accuses Ecua-
dorians of being ethnocentric, even though other countries are on the equator.
"Colombia" was named for Columbus ("Colon") but that doesn't make Colombians
ethnocentric, even though the whole landmass was discovered by Columbus. (At
least, "discovered" in the sense that Amerigo Vespucci, or Leif Ericson (sp.?)
discovered it--I am well aware there were already people here.) For that mat-
ter, nobody says that "United States" is ethnocentricism, even though other
countries (i.e. Mexico) have names containing the equivalent of "United States."
