[net.politics] Summit: some questions

orb@whuxl.UUCP (SEVENER) (11/22/85)

1)one million and two hundred thousand Americans signed a
petition calling on both Reagan and Gorbachev to stop
all nuclear testing and any further production of
nuclear weapons: why did Reagan refuse meet a representative
from the Nuclear Freeze to accept these petitions ?
Why did the media, in all their hype about the Summit,
scarcely mention this petition by over a million Americans?

2)why did Reagan refuse to renew the ABM treaty at the Summit
despite Soviet requests to renew it?

3)why did Reagan refuse to renew the SALT II treaty at the Summit
despite Soviet requests to renew it?

4)why did Reagan instruct our ambassador to the UN to *abstain*
from voting in favor of the UN resolution calling on both
the US and USSR to negotiate agreements to end the arms race?

5)why has Reagan refused to stop all our nuclear weapons testing
despite the fact the Soviets have unilaterally stopped their
own nuclear testing for 6 months?

6)why has Reagan refused to stop anti-satellite weapons testing
despite the fact the Soviets have unilaterally stopped their
own anti-satellite weapons testing for a year?
Given that satellites are critical for both arms control
verification *AND* for the Start Wars program, one would think
their protection would be most important.

7)why has Ronald Reagan refused to support *ANY* arms control
agreements negotiated by former Presidents Kennedy, Johnson,
  Nixon, Ford and Carter?

8)why has Reagan failed to get a single arms control agreement
  in five years in office?

9)why does Reagan plan on deploying 18,000 more offensive nuclear
weapons if he is truly working on *defensive* (sic) weapons
  rather than *offensive* weapons?
