High Technology Professionals for Peace has just put out a revised version of
their publication entitled "Are You Considering a Career in the Defense
Industry?"

"If you are a graduating science or engineering student, many of your most
attractive job offers are likely to come from military contractors. Often,
their recruiting literature will present their work as being full of
state-of-the-art technical challenges, perhaps only incidentally related to
military applications, and offering the high salaries and pleasant work
environment characteristic of such forefront technology. This image, used as a
marketing device, glosses over the heavy military involvement of many technical
firms. As a consequence, it can be difficult to realistically assess your
future prospects with such military contractors as General Dynamics,
McDonnell-Douglas and even IBM and ATT.

"Should you work in the military industry? Is the military industry a good
professional choice? How does getting a security clearance affect you? How
does it differ from the civilian industry? What ethical choices will you have
to face? In this brochure, we provide facts and try to clarify question about
the military industry both as a professinal choice and as a moral choice. By
developing the understanding to answer the above questions, you can improve your
chances of entering a satisfying career. Because nearly every weapon and tool
in our arsenal partially originated in the mind of a single engineer or
scientist, we believe that scientists and engineers should be concerned about
how their skills are used and work at choosing a career consistent with their
values. We have no definitive answers on issues of morality. However,
whatever your final decision, you can benefit from a consideratin of these
issues."
