Recent discussion on the net regarding the problems we face in present day American society leads me to make the following observations: Hypothesis: An educated and informed populace is necessary for the decision making process which must occur for the proper functioning of a civization. It is known that: 1) Many people in this country are functionally illiterate 2) Much of the "information" upon which people base their decisions is derived from the news media 3) All news media are biased, in some fashion 4) Much of what is presented via the media is accepted without question as being "true" Given the above, is it any wonder that we have some of the problems we currently face? Suggestion: Quality education should be a major goal, the intent of which should be to provide people with good tools for decision making, ie. reasoning skills, language skills, the ability to ask relevant questions, and the ability to search out the answers to those questions. Comment: Most education is provided by the government, and many people believe that when they leave school, their education stops. A careful public examination of the nature of education seems to be called for, followed by careful planning to correct the problems which will, without a doubt, be found. D.N.
