One of our people here has asked me to inquire about whether there are good optical-character-recognition scanners available hereabouts, preferably on campus. He has a great pile of old printouts -- endless pages of numbers -- that he wants in machine-readable form. Unfortunately, the print quality is not terribly good. It's old line-printer output. It's not dot-matrix, thank the lord, but the printer it was done on was not consistently well-aligned and it's not uncommon for the right quarter of a character to be chopped off. He needs something that either (a) is seriously smart, or (b) can be trained to deal with chopped characters. He's already tried UTCS; theirs isn't good enough. Any ideas? -- Welcome to Mars!
