[ut.general] PC-NFS clone: Better, faster, *cheaper*!

lewan@utpsych.toronto.edu (Stephan Lewandowsky) (05/19/89)

PC-NFS, by SUN Microsystems, allows sharing of files between PCs connected
to a SUN server via an Ethernet. Major drawbacks of the product have
been its size (it gobbles up 200K+ RAM) and its price (approx. CDN $300
even at the multiple copy discount).

We have been evaluating a competing product, published by Beame & Whiteside
Software in Hamilton, Ontario. It's called BW-NFS, takes up only 40K of RAM,
and costs under CDN $200 per copy for quantities of 20-49 (including a
super-fast telnet package).

We are about to order 20+ copies for our department (Psychology) but, if
there are more potential customers out there, perhaps we should get together
and purchase even more copies at once, thus further reducing the price.
The quantity discount is as follows:

          N Copies Discount
            20-49 30% (= approximately CDN $200 unit cost)
            50-99 39%
           100-249 46%
           250-499 55%

If you are interested in pursuing this (and perhaps in getting UTCS
to handle this...) please contact me as soon as possible. We would like
to place an order next week.
