Department: Physics Title: Systems Manager Classification: Manager I Full Time, paid from budget Salary Range: 08B Available immediately $45,981 - $54,095 - $62,209 Position Description: Responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Physics/Astronomy/CITA computing facilities, which currently include: - 24 diskless Sun workstations and three servers, running BSD-based UNIX - a Silicon Graphics 4D/240 server running System V-based UNIX - a few microVAX-II's running VMS (support for these is a minor aspect of the job as most of the Consortium's users have migrated or are migrating to UNIX) - 17 GB total disk storage - several tape drives, Exabytes, and printers - extensive Ethernet network running TCP/IP and DECnet, with 200 terminal server lines and full Internet access - several scientific software utilities and packages, including Fortran and the typesetting program TeX Oversees all computing servies provided for Consortium members, approximately 400 active accounts. Provides supervision and technical expertise to one full-time system programmer, one administrative assistant, and three part-time programmers, who provide support for the operation. Advise users when other staff are unable to answer their questions or solve the problem. Researches new software and hardware. Recommends and supervises upgrades of the system. Responsible for proper operation of auxiliary equipment in the computer room (power, air conditioning, etc.). Liaises with sales and service representatives. Prepares and monitors budget of approximately $250,000/year, and prepares final reports of annual usage for billing purposes. Education: B.Sc., preferably in Computer Science or related area Experience: Minimum 3 years' experience with UNIX system programming and/or UNIX system administration. Good knowledge of Fortran essential. Exposure to VMS an asset but not required. Experience with Sun Microsystems hardware an asset. Other: Must be adaptable and a fast learner in a constantly evolving environment. Non-smoking building.
