Must not be quite so impossible to put an 8087 on a 68000 (at least if you have the resources of an IBM) since their new XT370 uses custom microprogrammed versions of two 68000s and an 8087 to implement the 370 instruction set (I suppose they also had a few gates of interface logic bent to their speicifications too).

I believe that Jeff Arnold (mit-vax!jma) interfaced an 8087 to a 68000 for his Bachelor's Thesis projects, so it doesn't require huge resources.
