[net.arch] Disk caches??

cigas@sdcsvax.UUCP (John Cigas ) (10/02/84)

I'm currently working on analysing different disk buffering
requirements and techniques. Is anyone else out there pursuing these
matters too? If so, would you mind swapping info? I really hate
duplicating duplicating work thats already been done. Thanks.

When looking at disk cacheing, don't neglect the heavily buffered
hardware (well, firmware) buffering in modern disk controllers.
For example, last week IBM announced a new version of their 3880
disk controller with up to 32 megabytes of RAM cache, implemented
with 256K DRAMS. It transfers to and from main memory at
3MB/sec. Now, there's a disk controller for real men.
