In The DEC Professional Vol. 4, No. 5 (May 1985) there is an article titled "Cluster-11" by Mike Mayfield. It describes what appears to be a tightly coupled network of J-11 processors (each with 1/2 Mbyte of private ram) and up to 24 Mbytes of shared ram all hooked up to a pdp-11/70 or /84(?) front end. The top of the line (supposedly available 1Q 86) model has 15 J-11s, a total of 32 Mbytes of ram and a pdp-11/85 front end all for about $150k, with something like 20 times the speed of a Vax-11/780. For some unknown reason, this will run RSTS/E, but they are thinking about RSX-11 and Unix.
