	WORKSHOP/CONFERENCE ON APPLICATIONS OF SUPERCOMPUTERS

A Workshop/Conference on Applications of Supercomputers will be held at
Michigan Technological University from August 5 to August 9, 1985. Its
purpose is to expose members of the academic community to some of the
ideas and problems involved in designing and implementing codes on parallel
processors. A special effort will be made to encourage increased inter-
action between university faculty and researchers at national laboratories
and in industry. The workshop/conference will include invited talks by
researchers using supercomputers in industry and at national laboratories,
tutorials by members of the Michigan Tech faculty, and contributed papers
by workshop participants.

A preliminary program is now in place. A tentative list of speakers
and their topics is as follows: (* denotes speaker)

Dr. Ray Chin, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory
"Parallel Computations of Multiple Scales Problems"

Dr. Jack Dongarra and Dr. Danny Sorensen (*), Argonne National Laboratory
"Symmetric Eigenvalue Problems for Parallel Processors"

Dr. Janusz Kowalik and Dr. Donald Springer (*), Boeing Computer Services
"Boeing's Requirements for Local and Distributed Computing in AI"

Dr. Jon Larsen, KMS Fusion, Inc.
   "Computations in Fusion Physics"

Dr. Olaf Lubeck, Los Alamos National Laboratory
"A Benchmark Comparison of the Japanese Supercomputer and the CRAY-XMP"

Dr. Joseph McGrath, KMS Fusion, Inc.
   "Algorithms for Computational Continuum Dynamics"

Dr. Henry Makowitz, CRAY Research Inc.
"Numerical Experiments in Concurrent Multiprocessing with Thermal-
   Hydraulic Nuclear Reactor System Codes"

Dr. Victor Ransom, Idaho National Engineering Laboratories
   "Simulators for Advanced Nuclear Reactors"

Dr. Melvin Scott and Dr. Alex Treadway (*), Sandia National Laboratories
"Overview of Multitasking Efforts at Sandia National Laboratories"

   Dr. Burton Smith, Denelcor
   "Unorthodox MIMD Architecture"

Captain John Thomas Jr., Air Force Office of Scientific Research
"AFOSR's Interest in Applications of Supercomputers"

A tentative list of tutorial speakers and their topics is as follows
(all speakers are faculty members at Michigan Tech):

   Dr. Darrell Hicks
   "Introduction to Computational Continuum Dynamics"

Dr. Michael Gilpin and Dr. Robert Shelton
"Applications of Parallel Processors to Some Hard Discrete Problems,
   Parts 1 and 2"

   Dr. Glenn Ierley
"Solution of Nonlinear Boundary Value Problems by Spectral Methods:
   A Case Study"

   Dr. A. Barry Kunz
   "Electron Correlation in Large Systems"

   Dr. John Lowther
   "AI Architectures and Parallelism"

   Dr. Karl Ottenstein
"Detection of Implicit Parallelism in Programs"

   Dr. David Poplawski
   "Parallel Computer Architectures"

   Dr. William Predebon
"Computational Modeling of Material Response Under Shock Loading"

There will also be sessions for contributed papers; if you wish to
give a talk (of approximately 15 minutes in length), please send us an
abstract and we will contact you with further information. The proceed-
ings of this workshop/conference will be published in a special issue of
Applied Mathematics and Computation.

We have enclosed information on housing and local activities, as
well as information on travel to and from Houghton. Hancock/Houghton
is served by Simmons Airlines (also known as Republic Express); the
airport code is CMX. Rental cars are available at the airport; it is
recommended that they be reserved in advance. Applications for on-
campus housing should be sent to the address indicated on the enclosed
form. The registration fee of $60 (which includes a banquet on
Wednesday, August 7) should be sent to:

            Bursar - D93473
            Michigan Technological University
