Back in "the good ol' days", the IBM 1620 FORTRAN system that I used
would force parity errors throughout memory (I don't recall the method
too well, I think it was something like moving record-marks to odd
addresses).  Then if a "parity" trap occurred, the run-time system
would abort the program (this was a college environment).
