Well, here is the summary of the replies or information I have been able to
glean about general information regarding hard disk drives. My many thanks to
all those who replied or whose postings I have hacked up to make this summary.
I have not had a chance to pursue this any further however but some of
the supplied information looks very interesting. I hope this helps.

Perhaps, The Operating System Design: The XINU approach, by Douglas
Comer may be useful for the purpose. The last two chapters deal with a
simple (Unix like) file system, and a simple disk driver.

Expensive, but *highly* recommended. Includes complete discussions of
technology, design decisions, market analysis and even a source listing
of a disk driver for a CP/M system!

There is a discussion of the encoding scheme and disk format used on
Apple II disks in "Beneath Apple DOS", by Don Worth and Pieter Lechner,
published by Quality Software, 21601 Marilla Street, Chatsworth,
California 91311, ISBN 0-912985-00-3. It won't tell you much about
mainstream disk drives, though.

Yours, Fred

Copied from an NCR manual - I make no claim for accuracy:

Copies of the proposed SCSI standard (X3T9.2) can be obtained with
a $20 prepayment (include self-addressed mailing label) from:

X3T9.2 is right. The following is the address and phone of the X3T9.2

One can get soft copy of the SCSI spec on two 5 1/4" ibm format
floppies from mini-micro systems. All that they ask is that you
send the floppies in a self-address, stamped mailer. The address
is:

	Carl Warren
	Western Editor
	Mini-Micro Systems
	Cahners Publishing Co.
2041 Business Center Drive, Suite 109
	Irvine, CA 92715
	Request: SCSI TAR0003

They sent me one in about 5 day turnaround, so they must mail it back
within a day or two of receipt.

Rather than waiting for CBEMA , I got a copy of the current draft
standard (17B , dated 16 December 1985) by calling
1-800-325-SCSI and requesting their marketing literature for SCSI
devices as well as the standard. It arrived within three days of
placing the call. Good work, NCR!!! (I am not associated with
NCR in any way.)

In the event that others need this same information, the telemarketing
group can be reached at 316-688-8072, in Wichita, Kansas. I have no
information regarding a net address.
