[net.music] Looking for Beethoven's 9th recommendations

atkins@opus.UUCP (Brian Atkins) (04/08/85)

I would dearly love a good recording of Beethoven's Choral 9th.

Can anyone suggest a record label, conductor, or symphony that
does an outstanding 9th?

Alas, I have no CD, so vinyl will have to do. Please reply by mail,
I'll post to the net if interest warrants it.

Thanks in advance

I am a fan of the last Karl Bohm/Vienna Philharmonic recording of this work,
DG 2741 009. In fact, this is the last recording Bohm made, period. Soloists
are Jessye Norman, Brigitte Fassbaender, Placido Domingo, and Walter Berry,
and the Vienna State Opera concert choir provides backup vocals.

I heard Karajan's latest Ninth the other day; I'm afraid he's losing it in
his old age...
