[net.rec.ski] Summit County, Colorado

Okay, ski bums, I want to hear from you out there in
netland. Considering that the snow is coming soon(or has already
arrived in the manmade variety) this group had been awfully quiet
lately. I have just made plans to spend a week in Breckenridge
Colorado and I'm praying for lots of that famous Summit County
powder. Are there people out there familar with Breckenridge?
What are the good restaurants, bars? Any information about any
of the nearby ski areas(Keystone, A-Basin, and Copper) would
also be appreciated.Thanks in advance.

I haver never skiied Brenkenridge, but I've heard good things
about it. Keystone is a beginner/intermediate area with lots of
snowmaking (hope ya don't need it). A Basin is a smaller area with
lots of above timberline skiing - great on sunny 40 degree days, but
simply terrifying during a snowstorm. I prefer Copper Mountain; it
has some good black runs on the A ad B lifts, and plenty of long
cruisers elsewhere.

Of all the ski areas in Summit County, I find Breckenridge least desirable.
It is great if you are a low intermediate or high expert, but not so good
otherwise. There just aren't many trails for other skiers and the ones that
are available end at a few very crowded lifts. If you are stuck skiing there
for most of your trip and can handle any expert stuff at all, try the top
of Peak 9. It's much less crowded and the bowl is great fun if the snow is
nice. I hoghly recommend any of the other areas you mentioned, especially
Copper.

As for restaurants in Summit County, La France in Dillon is on my absolute
don't miss list. It's relatively expensive, but you will probably have one
of the best meals of your life, in addition to being entertained by the
chef/owner. Reservations are usually necessary. I always eat there at least
once when I am in the area.
