Seeing as there is very little action in this newsgroup I thought I'd submit something just so all the skiers would have something to read. I am considering a ski vacation for Feb. One of the places that has a good charter from NY is Jackson Hole. Now I know what the magazine and the ads say. I want to know what kind of place this is for us intermediate/advanced skiers. Is this an experts heaven or are there nice intermediate trails which aren't groomed into submission? I assume by Feb. conditions are pretty close to perfect. Please tell me anything you know about Jackson Hole, and don't leave out activities other than skiing(for instance is it difficult to find tours into Yellowstone at that time of the year?). Thanks in advance, Sharon Badian

Ahhh! Jackson Hole ... I went up last winter for a weekend and was impressed. Lots of veritcal to be skied. I went in Jan. and the snow was a bit lousy by Utah standards but the area was excellent. There's plenty of intermediate to advanced runs and powder stashes can be found in the trees. As for other activities, we went up on a full moon weekend and toured into Jenny Lake by moonlight. Wound up skiing all night! This is the only way to see the Tetons ... if you can do a full moon week, go for it. We also skied Targe over on the Idaho side of the mountains. If you want powder (and don't mind some weather) head over there one day. It's a bit of a drive but well worth it. We skied waist deep runs all day and never ran out of untracked snow. I've never toured Yellowstone, but rumor has it that it should be done by renting a cobin and going in for a few days. As for Snow King, the view's nice but that's all! Libations? By all means, head for Jackson Hole. It's absolutely great for intermediate/ advanced skiers. In fact, they even have trails explicitly marked as being for that level of skier. Such trails are hardly ever groomed, if ever at all. In addition, there are virtually no lift lines except for the tram, which is mainly attractive to those who want to ski the expert terrain (but be sure to go up at least once on a sunny day during your trip). Since it looks like this will be a good year for snow, Jackson Hole should be fantastic. If you can tear yourself away form the skiing, it is possible to visit Yellow- stone from the Flagg Ranch at the south entrance. There you can rent a snowmobile and use it to travel to the geyser area via park roads as a one day trip. There are lots of great things to see, but you've never really done anything masochistic until you've traveled about 100 miles in one day on a snowmobile! Also, I found myself feeling guilty for making noise everytime I saw a cross-country skier. -- Richard LeBlanc School of ICS, Georgia Tech, Atlanta GA 30332 CSNet: Rich @ GATech ARPA: Rich.GATech @ CSNet-Relay uucp: ...!{akgua,allegra,rlgvax,sb1,unmvax,ut-ngp,ut-sally}!gatech!rich
