Here's a vote for Loveland Basin ski area in Colorado...

Pro:	* One of the highest, so the snow is usually pretty good.

	* Closest decent ski area to Denver, about 60 miles west,
just above the Eisenhower Tunnel in fact.

	* Runs range from simple to expert, lots of choices and
	  variety.

	* Medium cost -- $16/13 (weekend/weekday) this year.

	* No condos, etc. nearby so it's usually not as crowded as,
say, Winter Park (the Disneyland of ski areas).

Con:	* No lodging nearby; you have to drive a ways east or west
	  to stay the night.

	* Often cold and windy on the uppermost (exposed) slopes.

Anyone else have opinions on the area?

By the way, the local paper puts out a Colorado ski summary each year,
including lift ticket prices, number of lifts, elevations, acres, dates,
etc. Anyone want it? If I get, say, five responses (by mail, please),
I'll type it all in.

Alan,

I agree with most of what you said about Loveland (also, I think
ticket prices are cheaper this year). You might have mentioned that
one can get in a full day of skiing and head home before the
Colorado version of the 24 hours of LeMans starts from the Dillon
area. Typically the area is not nearly as crowded as the Dillon areas
either.

However, I also feel that the variety of runs could be better.
Specifically, the black runs are fairly tight and the blue runs
all have pretty much the same character.

This year they have expanded the on-slop restaurant.

All in all, Loveland is one of my favorites for day skiing!

Sorry to make this a follow-up article, but my mail reply was returned.

I would like to see the newspaper summary of skiing in Colorado, since
I may take a trip there late this winter.
