[net.rec.ski] Whiteface, Lake Placid, NY

I went skiing at Whiteface Mtn, Lake Placid, NY. It's
that teeny, weeny place in those mountains that I can't spell
where they held the 1980 Olympics. Variety is not its strong
suit. I found the area somewhat boring as did most of the
people we were with. There are some good expert runs(the
men's and women's downhill runs) but not much else. There
are no intermediate runs. We skied all weekend on the expert
stuff. Conditions were pretty good, except in some spots
the snow is a little sparse and the rocks lie in wait for
your skis to come by(you should see the lovely gouge in
my ski). I think this would be a good place for someone
to learn to ski--lots of mellow terrain. But the lift
lines for that terrain can get pretty long. Lines for the
two chairs that service only expert terrain were non-
existant. One positive--the view from the top of the
mountain is quite spectacular.
The town of Lake Placid is about 10 miles from
Whiteface and it is a nice place. There seemed to be lots
of nice restaurants and the nightlife was hopping
(this from some friends who are die-hard partyers). We
stayed at the Mirror Lake Inn which is very nice but
it ain't cheap. The prime rib dinner there is a great
deal and all the food was excellent.
