Yes, it is true. You people in the east and the west will probably go: "So what", but for me it was quite something not to have to get on a lift every three minutes (skiing slow at that). Lutsen is a small town on the north shore of Lake Superior. It is just over a 4 hour drive from Mpls. Most of their runs are intermedeate (blue squares). There isn't much of a place for the total beginner, but their were alot of nice down hill trails that would have loved as a beginner. Only one hill had mogals on it (probably because it was too narrow for the mogal eater to fit on). I liked it alot better than upper Michigan even if it was just slightly less challenging. There was some good tree skiing and some slopes that were steep enough. There are three lifts, one T-bar, and one other gizmo that I am not quite sure what to call. The gizmo what alot like a T-bar only faster. Half the fun was getting up the hill. The skiing area covered alot of ground and there were never any lines (I went last weekend too). The lake keeps the weather more moderate than most of the stories you might have heard about, say, International Falls. I learned how to ski on mountains so for me to like this place is pretty good. For the past five years I have been in the Mid west, though. I have promised myself a trip to Steamboat next winter. I would be happy to tell you more about Lutsen. Send mail for more info.
