[net.rec.ski] Where to ski in Europe responses

minow@decvax.UUCP (Martin Minow) (03/15/84)

A bit over one month ago I requested advice on European skiing
vacations and received a number of helpful replies, which follow
lightly edited.

I'm off on my trip on Friday, having finally decided to simplify
matters and go to the Club Med in St. Moritz. If I survive,
I'll report back in early April.

Last week, I was in California for a family celebration (my dad's
80th birthday) and spent a few great mid-week days at Mammoth.
The conditions were lousy for Mammoth -- Eastern hardpack -- but
that was no problem at all. If you go there, may I recommend
that you stay at the Snow Goose Inn (bed and breakfast) (and
feel free to tell the owner I sent you).

I asked people while on the trip. Someone suggested "les Trois
Montaignes" in France. Can't say more.

Christmas before last I spent a week skiing at Chamonix, France.

I arrived in Chamonix without a place to stay and found a nice
pension (private room with sink & bidet, and a shared bath down
the hall) which cost me aprox. $9.00 per day with strong coffee,
fresh hot french croissant and orange marmelade for breakfast.
It was called the Hotel du Stade and should be easy to find.

Lift tickets (5 day pass) and group lessons (I'm an intermediate
skier) worked out to be aprox. $10 per day, including the bus ride
to where you ski each day. Many of the instructors and the whole
of my ski class spoke English.

Meals consisted of either a bottle of wine, bread, cheese and
pate from the market (aprox. $6) or many fine bistros in the village.

There is a casino in the village and I found it entertaining to
play roulette in french. There is also good bus and train transportation
from Geneva Airport direct to Chamonix.

If you go, you ski the Valle Blanche (a glacier), which is a full
day guided trip.

If you get to Austria, St. Anton is wonderful.

...

Also, you might consult the last 12 or so issues of SKI/SKIING magazine;
I seem to remember there being quite a few articles about Europe skiing.
