[net.rec.ski] Where do I go from L.A.?

I will be moving to the San Gabriel Valley or upper Orange County area
by ski season.  Where are the steepest, least crowded, and closest ski
area from that area?  What kind of skiers go to these places?  Are there
any ski shops that I could trust to mount some bindings correctly?

Thanks in advance.  I'm used to mid-Vermont skiing so I can handle
any conditions (except powder not so well).  I'm looking for as
much challenge as I can find.
